This February is Black History Month. Black History Month is when we celebrate the contributions of African Americans to the United States.
In 1926 Black History Month was made by the historian Carter G. Wilson. The month of February was chosen for this holiday because it was close to President Abraham Lincoln's birthday. They put it close to his birthday because he was the man that started to abolish slavery. The holiday was first established as a week, but the popularity of this holiday grew in the United States. It was expanded to a month in 1976.
To this day we celebrate this month to support the achievements and sacrifices made by African Americans.
